This gets its own page, sort of as a word to the wise: if you don’t like autistic people and you think poorly of a community that includes them, you should probably not come to any of our events.
We’re not even going to say that we blame you. Studies show that neurotypical people can clock an autistic person within eight seconds, and even if they don’t know what they don’t like about that person, they know that they don’t like them.
Autistic people socialize differently, have struggles that frustrate neurotypical individuals, and the two populations sometimes mesh very poorly.
Within Xenion, Autistics are the majority of our active membership, with many of our membership being specifically AuDHD. We tic, we stim, we vibe. A lot of us have dietary restrictions, not because of allergies, but because of sensory issues.
Just like most magical paths (like most everything else) are made for neurotypical people, ours was built for a certain kind of neurospicy. We have initiations, even, that can help with unmasking, if that’s on your to-do list.
Everyone in our group is either autistic or cool with autism. If you’re worried, just give us a heads up about what your unique autistic struggles are. If the smell of cheese makes you ill, we can skip the pizza. Don’t be ashamed to bring stims, a stuffy, or your safe food. If you sometimes go non-verbal, you wouldn’t be the only one.
On the flip-side, this is not a place where you can get away with bigotry or nastiness by saying you’re autistic. We all know better. You can have any neurotype and be a jerk. We don’t like jerks.
And, to be extremely clear, we don’t have money. We don’t charge for our events, and we’re all broke. That means we have no infrastructure, and our group, as such, can’t provide material accommodations. This is a “bring your own noise canceling headphones” sort of situation.
If you are wondering whether our group can accommodate you, a good guideline is that if you can eat at a restaurant, you’ll probably be fine here. If that situation poses significant challenges for you, you might not be.
